GUIDE

How to Find Large Files on Windows 11 (Built-in Steps First)

When your drive is filling up, the quickest wins are already in Windows. You can see how much space is left, let Windows suggest large or unused files, and sort a folder so the biggest files are at the top. Here is the order that works, with the built-in steps first and an optional app for when you want results grouped in one place.

What is taking up space on my C: drive?

Select Start > Settings > System > Storage. Storage settings show how your storage is used, broken down into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, System & reserved, and more. Select Show more categories to see the rest.

If you use OneDrive, Files On-Demand can save space: files show as online-only in File Explorer and don't take up space on your PC. To get space back from a file you have already opened, right-click it in File Explorer and select Free up space.

1. See how much space is left

Select File Explorer on the taskbar, then select This PC on the left. The space left on each drive is shown under Devices and drives. That tells you which drive to work on.

2. Ask Windows for large or unused files

Select Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.

Review each category, including Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud and Unused apps. Windows suggests items and shows how much space you'll save. Tick what you don't need, then select Clean up for each section.

If it has been fewer than 10 days since you upgraded Windows, your previous version of Windows is listed as a system file you can delete. Deleting it can't be undone, and you won't be able to go back to your previous version of Windows.

3. Sort a folder by size

Personal files often take more space than anything Windows can clean up.

  1. Open File Explorer and, under This PC, open a folder. The Videos, Music, Pictures and Downloads folders usually hold the largest files.
  2. Select View > Details.
  3. Right-click an empty spot, then select Sort by > Size. The largest files are now at the top of the list.
  4. Delete what you don't need, or move files you want to keep to a USB drive or SD card. Empty the Recycle Bin afterwards, because deleted files still use space there until you do.

Sorting works one folder at a time, so repeat it for each folder you want to check.

4. Let Storage Sense handle temporary files

Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage and set Storage Sense to On. With the default settings it runs when your device is low on disk space and cleans up unnecessary temporary files. Recycle Bin items are deleted after some time, and your Downloads folder and cloud files aren't touched unless you set it up to. Storage Sense works on your system drive only, usually C:. For other drives, go to Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives. More detail is in C: drive full? Find duplicate photos first.

5. When the built-in steps aren't enough

Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense and sort by size will cover a simple "what is big?" check, and if they freed enough space you can stop here. They are limited in two ways:

  • One folder at a time. Sort by size shows the files in the folder you opened. It doesn't pull results from several folders into one list.
  • No comparing file contents. None of these steps checks whether two files are the same, so a duplicate with a different name is easy to miss.

Disclosure: we (SolaceSoftware) make and sell Solace Sweep.

That is the job Solace Sweep is built for. Its product page describes it as a way to "find duplicate, oversized and temporary files on your PC and review them before anything is removed."

  • Scans local folders for duplicates, oversized files, empty items, temporary data and other cleanup candidates.
  • Groups the results for review so you choose every file action. Nothing is removed until you review it.
  • Reference paths let you protect a preferred copy during comparisons.
  • Screens for duplicate files, similar images and biggest files, shown on the product page with sample data.
  • Runs on your own Windows PC, designed for reclaiming storage without uploading file data.

Tested: it found 6 duplicate files in 5 groups (13.88 MiB), and the similar-images scan caught a resized copy. That was a test on sample duplicate files, not a test on a full drive.

Limits: you need Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit. It is a portable, self-contained executable, and the ZIP is about 207 MB. The shop page lists the size and SHA-256 of the exact ZIP you download. Optional video and image features may need additional codecs or FFmpeg. Scan results can be incomplete or contain false matches, and delete, move and rename actions may be irreversible. The app isn't code-signed yet, so on first launch Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway.

6. A safe-delete checklist

Whichever route you use, before you delete anything:

  • Preview every selection before you act on it.
  • Keep a verified backup of anything you care about.
  • Avoid system and program folders.
  • Prefer the Recycle Bin over permanent deletion when it is available.

7. Questions

Is it safe to delete a large file?

Only if you know what it is. Check the file name and the folder it is in, keep a backup of anything you care about, and stay out of system and program folders.

Is it safe to delete temporary files on Windows 11?

Windows is built to handle them for you. With its default settings, Storage Sense runs when your device is low on disk space and cleans up unnecessary temporary files, and Cleanup recommendations lists Temporary files and shows the space you'll save before you select Clean up.

Does Storage Sense show me my biggest files?

It cleans up temporary files and old Recycle Bin items on a schedule you choose. To see your biggest files, use Cleanup recommendations (Large or unused files) or sort a folder by size.

Does Solace Sweep upload my files?

The product page says it runs on your own Windows PC and is designed for reclaiming storage without uploading file data.

What does it cost, and can I get a refund?

$36.75 once, with no subscription and no automatic renewal. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee. See the Refund terms.
