Solace Borderless

GUIDE

How to make any windowed game borderless full screen on Windows

Exclusive full screen makes alt-tab slow and fights your second monitor. Windowed mode wastes space on a title bar and borders. Borderless full screen gives you both: the game fills the monitor, and alt-tab and your other screens keep working like they do with any window. Here's how to get it, starting with what the game and Windows already offer.

Step 1: check the game's own display setting

Open the game's Settings and look under Video, Graphics or Display for Display mode or Window mode. Many games offer Borderless, Borderless windowed or Windowed fullscreen. If yours does, pick it. It's the simplest and safest option.

Step 2: try the Windows shortcuts

  • Alt+Enter switches many games between full screen and windowed.
  • Win+Up arrow maximizes a window, but the title bar stays.
  • Win+Shift+Left/Right arrow moves the active window to your other monitor.

What Windows can't do: there's no Windows setting that removes a game window's title bar and frame, or forces borderless for a game that doesn't offer it.

Borderless windowed vs full screen: which to use

  • Borderless suits you if you alt-tab a lot, use a second monitor, or stream, because the game behaves like any other window.
  • Exclusive full screen is what some older games need to change resolution, and a few games only offer that.
  • Try both in your game and keep whichever feels right. Results vary by game and PC.

Doing it with Solace Borderless

Disclosure: Solace Borderless is our product. SolaceSoftware makes and sells it.

Solace Borderless is a small Windows app that makes a windowed game fill the screen with no borders. Per its product page:

  • One click or Ctrl+Alt+B (you can change the hotkey) makes the window borderless full screen. Click Restore, or press the hotkey again, and it goes back exactly as it was.
  • Pick the monitor, or a custom size such as 2560x1080 centered on it.
  • Remember a game once and it goes borderless every time it opens. If a game puts its border back, Solace Borderless removes it again.
  • Every window is restored when you quit, even after a forced quit.
  • Nothing is injected into your games. It only changes the window's style and position with standard Windows calls, and never touches the game's files or memory. No account, no telemetry and no admin rights. It contacts us only when you click Check for updates.

Limits, stated plainly: set the game to windowed mode first, because exclusive full screen isn't changed. Some Microsoft Store games may not respond.

Before you buy: you need Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10). It's a per-user installer of about 3 MB, with no administrator rights needed. The download is unsigned, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" on first launch. Click More info > Run anyway, then check the ZIP against the SHA-256 on the product page.
