GUIDE
How to get a moving desktop background on Windows 11
You want the desktop to move: rain on a window, a slow sunset, drifting stars. The honest answer comes first. On regular Windows 11 releases there is no built-in setting for an animated, looping desktop wallpaper. Here's what Windows can do on its own, what it can't, and how to add real animation without slowing your PC down.
What Windows 11 can do by itself
These are all in Settings > Personalization > Background.
1. Slideshow: the closest built-in option
- Put the images you want in one folder.
- Under Personalize your background, choose Slideshow.
- Click Browse and pick the folder.
- Set Change picture every to 1 minute, the shortest interval.
- Turn on Shuffle if you like.
It's a background that changes, but it doesn't animate. Each picture swaps every minute or more.
2. Windows Spotlight
Choose Windows Spotlight and Windows rotates photos from Microsoft for you. It changes on its own schedule. You can't choose the pictures, and nothing moves.
3. Animated GIFs don't play
You can pick a GIF as a background picture, but Windows shows only its first frame. That's expected, not a fault on your PC.
4. Video backgrounds are only in preview builds
Microsoft has tested MP4 and MKV video backgrounds in Windows Insider preview builds. Turning that on means joining a preview channel and switching on a hidden setting, so it isn't an option on the stable Windows most people use. Check Settings > Personalization > Background > Picture > Browse photos after each Windows update. If you can select a video file there, your build has it.
Bottom line: without an app, you can get a slideshow but not real animation.
What to look for in a live-wallpaper app
A wallpaper runs all day, so a bad one costs you battery and CPU. Look for these:
- It pauses when covered. If a full-screen game or a maximized window hides the desktop, the wallpaper should stop drawing completely.
- A frame-rate cap. 30 fps looks smooth for slow scenes. Unlimited fps just burns power.
- A battery mode that lowers the frame rate on a laptop.
- It sits behind your icons. Desktop icons should stay clickable on top of the animation.
- Start with Windows is off until you choose it.
- No account and no always-online catalogue if you just want a few nice scenes.
- No installer or admin rights if you're on a work or shared PC.
Quick check: is your wallpaper slowing your PC?
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Processes tab and sort by CPU.
- With the desktop visible, note the wallpaper app's CPU and GPU use. Then maximize a window over it. A well-behaved app drops to nearly zero once covered.
Doing it with Solace Wallpaper
Disclosure: Solace Wallpaper is our product. SolaceSoftware makes and sells it.
Solace Wallpaper is a small Windows app that puts a live, animated scene behind your desktop icons. Per its product page:
- Ten original animated scenes drawn in code: Aurora Ridge, Neon Drizzle, Koi Pond, Golden Hour, Nebula Drift, Sakura Fall, Rainy Window, Liquid Silk, Retro Horizon and Firefly Glade. Each one loops seamlessly.
- Light on your PC: capped at 30 fps (24 fps with Battery saver), and it stops drawing completely while your desktop is covered.
- Your settings: change the motion speed for each wallpaper and set a wallpaper for each display. You can also add your own wallpapers as a small HTML page plus a
wallpaper.jsonfile. - Quiet: the app and included wallpapers make no network connections of their own. There's no account, online catalogue, update check or analytics. Start with Windows stays off until you turn it on.
- Small and portable: a download of about 3 MB, with no installer or administrator rights. Unzip it, run
SolaceWallpaper.exe, pick a scene in the Library and click Set as Wallpaper. Closing the window keeps it running in the tray.
Compared with big live-wallpaper platforms such as Wallpaper Engine, you don't get a huge community catalogue. You get ten curated scenes, one small app and no account.
Before you buy: You need Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10). The download is an unsigned ZIP, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" on first launch. Click More info > Run anyway, then check the ZIP against the SHA-256 published on the product page. To remove it, turn off Start with Windows if you enabled it, quit from the tray and delete the folder. Settings live in %LocalAppData%\Solace Wallpaper.
Price: $4.59 once, with 12 months of best-effort support by email. No subscription and no automatic renewal.
Which route?
- A changing photo is enough: use Slideshow at a 1-minute interval. It's free and built in.
- You want real motion that stays light and offline: try a live-wallpaper app that pauses when covered.
